The affordable housing advocate served as an advisor to Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush
President Donald Trump has nominated housing advocate Pam Patenaude as deputy secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Patenaude was shortlisted as HUD Secretary before Sec. Ben Carson secured the position in March, according to HousingWire. She served as an advisor to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, and was the latter’s HUD assistant secretary for community, planning and development.
“Pam’s extensive knowledge of housing issues and dedicated service to this department under two previous administrations makes her an exceptional choice for the position of Deputy Secretary," Carson said in a statement. "She will bring a wealth of experience and steady leadership to HUD in her new role as the department’s chief operating officer. I look forward to working with her to achieve more efficient and effective housing policies that create jobs, strengthen communities and ensure safe, affordable housing for all Americans.”
She is the current president of the J. Ronald Terwilliger Foundation for America’s Families, a nonprofit dedicated to transforming the country’s housing policies and to address affordable housing.
“Pam is passionate about affordable housing and has a deep knowledge of housing policy and the programs administered by HUD,” said founder J. Ronald Terwilliger. “That’s why, three years ago, I asked her to join me in starting the foundation with the goal of exposing the ‘silent housing crisis’ in our country. It was a great decision: Pam has been a wonderful, visionary leader of the Foundation.
“While I will be very sorry to see Pam move on from her Foundation work, I know the foundation’s loss will be America’s gain. Pam is the perfect choice to serve as Secretary Carson’s deputy, and HUD will be in good hands under her stewardship. I urge the Senate to act swiftly on her nomination.”
