Chief executive on integration wins, broker growth, and clawback reform progress

After navigating a pivotal year marked by growth, integration, and industry change, Simon Bednar, CEO of Finsure, has once again been named to MPA’s prestigious Mortgage Global 100 list. This marks his third consecutive appearance after previous recognitions in 2022 and 2023 – solidifying his place as a standout voice in the global mortgage space.
In his latest appearance on MPA TV, Bednar shares a behind-the-scenes look at a year that demanded bold decision-making and steady leadership. One of the biggest developments in 2024 was Finsure’s integration into MA Financial, a move that could have risked disrupting internal cohesion. But for Bednar, preserving company culture was paramount.
“I couldn’t do it without the team behind me,” he said. “They all bring a unique view on how we should deliver value to our network.”
With a network nearing 4,000 brokers, and an average of 100 new brokers joining every month, Bednar emphasized the importance of empowerment and trust across the organisation. His leadership style is one that values autonomy and learning through experience.
“I get the most out of my team when they’re free to make decisions,” he said. “A platform where they can make those mistakes… goes a long way to driving our success.”
Outside of internal growth, Bednar has continued to be a passionate advocate for broker interests. In 2024, he spearheaded calls for reform in the controversial clawback system, pushing for a more equitable structure. His efforts bore fruit, with some lenders now shifting from fixed clawback amounts to step-down models - a significant win for the broker community.
Looking ahead, Bednar has his sights set on international expansion, with New Zealand already underway and Canada firmly on the horizon. But even with global ambitions, his priority remains clear:
“We want to continue to grow – but we also want to make sure we don’t lose what makes Finsure special.”
