Ortus Financial's founder shares tips from his award-winning broker success

Adam Rakowski, principal and founder of Ortus Financial, has been recognised as one of MPA’s Top 100 Brokers for 2024, marking a standout achievement in his 24-year career in banking and finance. In a recent MPA TV interview, Rakowski shared his journey from Macquarie Bank to launching a fast-growing mortgage brokerage with a people-first philosophy.
“I’ve done all the roles - from the back office to senior sales. As a broker now, I can empathise with every part of the process,” Rakowski said. “That foundation gave me the confidence to start something of my own.”
Since launching his broking business in 2016 and officially forming Ortus Financial in 2019, Rakowski has scaled the business from a solo operation to a team of 16 or 17 as of today, recently expanding into Queensland with plans underway in Melbourne, WA, and Brisbane. While the company’s capabilities span residential to commercial finance, its core remains unchanged.
“We hire good people who are respectful and do things the right way,” he said. “We’re growing, but sustainably. It’s never about growth for growth’s sake.”
Rakowski emphasised the importance of empathy and emotional intelligence in an increasingly transactional industry. “Buying a property is the biggest thing most people will ever do. It’s not just a deal - it’s an experience. That’s why we focus so much on the human side,” he said.
He also addressed current challenges facing brokers, including intense competition and market fluctuations. “You’ve got to be a long-term thinker. Don’t rush into every new opportunity - understand your value proposition and stick to it.”
When it comes to technology, Rakowski views it as a powerful ally, not a threat. “Tech enables better client service. It frees up time so I can do more of what matters - meeting clients, building relationships, and growing the business the right way,” he said.
