CBA names new executive

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has announced the appointment of Gaven Morris (pictured above) as its new executive general manager for corporate affairs, effective July 29.

Morris brings over 30 years of experience in international and Australian media, consulting, and education. He is currently an industry professor at Western Sydney University, an adjunct professor at the University of Canberra, and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

He also previously served as director of news, analysis and investigations at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Since 2021, he has been the founder and managing director of Bastion Transform, part of the Bastion Group, an independent creative and communications agency.

During his tenure at ABC, Morris led a team that transformed ABC News into an online and social media news service. He also played a key role in the launch of the ABC News Channel and the organisation’s transition to a cross-platform service.

Morris began his career in the Canberra press gallery, working as a Fairfax copy kid and later as a political reporter and producer for the ABC and Network Ten. His career highlights include being a senior member of the team that launched Al Jazeera English and contributing to the early development of CNN.com.

“I’m delighted that Gaven will be joining the Commonwealth Bank team,” said CBA group executive Monique Macleod.

“As well as being a highly respected journalist and news executive, he also has a wealth of experience leading high performing teams in fast-paced environments and through complex and rapid change. This expertise, combined with his ability to engage diverse audiences and his strong personal values, will be an outstanding asset to the team.”
