CommBank, Anthropic boost AI partnership

The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has broadened its collaboration and investment with Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) safety and research company. The deal comes as CBA seeks to reinvent banking by utilising AI to make services more intuitive and personalised.

Gavin Munroe (pictured), CBA's chief information officer, emphasised the potential of AI in transforming customer experiences. He noted that this partnership will accelerate CBA's AI capabilities while ensuring safety and responsibility.

The collaboration will also make CBA engineers available to work with Anthropic's experts, which will develop their professional expertise and help shape safe AI practices.

"This partnership is also intended to uplift and unlock AI potential for our engineers, who will have an opportunity to work with Anthropic’s AI experts to explore how we can accelerate how we build the products to serve and protect our customers, including how we can further protect customers and communities from scams and fraud," Munroe added.

Anthropic, a pivotal player in AI research and development, is known for its development of large language model (LLM) Claude.

"By combining Anthropic's advanced AI capabilities with CBA's deep financial expertise we can create more personalised experiences for customers while maintaining the highest standards for safety and security," said Krishna Rao, Anthropic's chief financial officer.

"Our teams look forward to working closely with CBA's engineers and data scientists to explore innovative applications of our technology, particularly in critical areas like fraud prevention and customer service enhancement."
