Oceania leads the 2024 GRESB standing investments and development benchmarks

Australian property firms top global sustainability rankings

Australian property companies are leading global sustainability efforts, according to the 2024 GRESB benchmark results, the Property Council of Australia has announced.

The Oceania region, which includes Australia and New Zealand, ranked first in both the standing investments benchmark and the development benchmark – a recognition that underscores the strong commitment to sustainability by the Australian property industry.

Mike Zorbas (pictured above), chief executive of the Property Council of Australia, highlighted the achievement, noting that Australian property leaders continue to set a global standard in sustainable building practices.

“In 2024, Australian property leaders continue to create world-leading sustainable buildings and portfolios,” Zorbas said. “These gold medal results should be a source of national pride.

“We congratulate the many Australian companies recognised on the GRESB leaderboards, as well as those companies innovating and demonstrating emerging leadership in this field. Building leadership and innovation matters because the built environment accounts for a quarter of Australian emissions.

“We can all be proud that Australian property leaders continue to lead the charge toward achieving our national net zero targets and continue to work with governments to focus on older existing stock.”

The 2024 GRESB benchmark saw record participation, with 2,223 real estate entities assessed globally, including 132 from Australia. Collectively, GRESB evaluated over $10 trillion in real estate assets.

GRESB, established in 2009, is the world’s largest source of ESG data for real estate assets, serving as a global standard for sustainability benchmarking in the property sector.
