Getting formal qualifications through RPL
With pending legislation and licensing on the way, many brokers are looking to get formal qualifications. What many will not know is that they do not necessarily have to book themselves into a classroom or online course to get their certificate
By simply, providing some evidence that they have the experience and know what they are doing, many brokers will be able to get their qualification without ever setting foot in a classroom or spending hours in an online course.
"How is this possible?" you may well ask. It very simple, all brokers need to do is apply for RPL. "What's that?" You say.
'RPL' stands for 'Recognition of Prior Learning' and is a process that registered training organisations (RTOs) offer that acknowledges the skills and knowledge obtained through learning on the job and from life experience.
The RPL process recognises any prior knowledge and experience you have and measures it against the requirements for the qualification that you would like to achieve.
What are the benefits of RPL?
If you apply for RPL and are successful you could:
- Eliminate the need for training in skills and knowledge you already have
- Save time by not having to attend classes and completing unnecessary work
- Save money because you will not have to buy textbooks and learning resources
- Complete your qualification in a shorter time
Does it cost anything?
Applying for RPL can be the same price as a normal enrolment although many institutions provide RPL enrolments at a reduced premium to standard courses to reflect the reduced training costs. It should be noted that the RTO has invested time and effort in designing the process that you will follow and must assess your submission and incur administration and typical business expenses. Essentially, you are enrolled in the course, just not attending the training. Instead you are collecting the evidence needed to submit your application.
What can count towards RPL?
All of us learn new skills and gain experience through the various jobs we hold and experiences we have. Work experience gained on the job, or through the practice of skills in other social or sporting groups all contribute to our effectiveness. The RPL process allows you to provide evidence of those skills and gain formal recognition towards a nationally accredited qualification.
Can I get RPL for the entire qualification?
The short answer is yes. Provided you have sufficient evidence to prove your knowledge, skills and competence required for the qualification you are seeking. Your training provider should have a clear easy to follow process which helps you gather and present this information.
So before you enrol in a standard course it is worth checking out the RPL options provided by various institutions. It could save you a lot of time, heartache and money!
