BDM in the Spotlight: Joel Ganino, SFG

BDM in the Spotlight and State Manager in the Spotlight and is a regular series, giving brokers insight into the lives of some of the country’s leading relationship managers.

The focus of MPA’s latest profile is Joel Ganino (pictured above), SFG’s business development manager for Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, who joined the aggregator in March.

Ganino has almost 20 years’ experience working in the financial services industry, including a number of BDM and partnership roles.

The keen Essendon Bombers fan said he saw himself as an ambassador for SFG in conversations with brokers outside of the group.

Ganino said brokers should expect great service, product support, training opportunities and friendship from their BDMs and lenders.

“If you build a community in your business, you will find that people are not only able to, but wanting to assist as we all grow together,” he said.

Full name: Joel Ganino
Job title: Business Development Manager Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania
Company: Specialist Finance Group
Number of years in the industry: 19 years in financial services
Location: Docklands, Melbourne, Victoria

What did you do before entering the industry?

Financial planning and property investment.

Please give a brief description of your role and how you support brokers.

My role is to provide great service and support to our existing and prospective SFG members as a main point of contact within the group in Victoria. I liaise with industry stakeholders to put together great educational events that allow our brokers the opportunity to continue to enhance their skill set to achieve their goals.

Moreover, I see myself as an ambassador for our group and welcome discussions with brokers outside of SFG to see how we can be a great solution to help them achieve their business goals.

A goal that you aim to achieve in your role this year?

Having recently joined the group, my goal is to meet all our SFG members and connect with and understand their business. I would also like to continue the great growth that SFG has seen in Victoria, SA and Tasmania in recent years.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Working with a diverse array of people and seeing them succeed is what gets me out of bed. I am thrilled to be a part of a team that serves a diverse group, and some of the best brokers in our region.

What sets successful brokers apart?

Brokers that know the key numbers within their business and can identify opportunities due to those numbers. Knowing the numbers enables brokers to identify which levers to pull in their business.

What should brokers be demanding from a BDM and lender relationship?

Great service, product support and training opportunities as well as friendship. Broking can be an isolating venture, but it doesn’t need to be. If you build a community in your business, you will find that people are not only able to, but wanting to assist as we all grow together.

Are there any industry-wide changes that you think would benefit brokers?

Yes, I think there is much to be done in the space of clawbacks, net of offset payments and also brokers’ ability to change partnerships.

I am a huge advocate for brokers, and their ability to choose the best business partners and work with them is always at the front of my mind.

What do you provide to brokers that makes you valuable to them?

A diverse array of commercial and financial knowledge that can help them be a smarter business owner and provider of credit assistance solutions.

I am also a connector and so if one of our members has a need, if I can’t assist, I generally know someone who can. Being able to connect people that solves problems or advances their business gives me great joy.

Describe your ideal weekend.

Any weekend where Essendon has won. Go the Bombers!
