This week's MyState Bank BDM for NSW/ACT has been in the industry for 15 years.
MyState Bank BDM for NSW/ACT, Martin Liszewski has been in banking since he was 18 years old, working full time while he studied for a Bachelor of Commerce of Management at the University of Western Sydney in the evenings.
BDM in the spotlight asks a different BDM the same seven questions – giving you a weekly insight into the lives of some of the top BDM’s in the country.
How often do you see brokers in a week?
I try to see at-least four brokers a day, four days a week. I think face-to-face meetings are very important, however you must have objectives and a structure for a meeting to ensure you focus on adding value. I think it is really important to take the time to think of different ways you can help a broker and their business, versus just talking product and price. Understanding the brokers’ needs has been the key to helping my relationships flourish.
What do brokers want most from you?
Excellent all round service. By this I mean not just delivering the expected, but also getting additional results. I make myself available 24/7 for my key brokers. I want them to know that if they are in front of a client and they need my support that I’m always available and I encourage them to call me, regardless if it’s a Wednesday or a Sunday.
What is your favourite part of the job?
My favourite part of the job is helping brokers to grow and making a difference to their business.
What distinguishes the best brokers you deal with?
The best brokers have a ‘can do’ attitude, confidence, passion, always do what they say and also have a high level of positive energy! I really look up to some of these guys and have them as my role models.
Describe your ideal weekend:
Going to the Blue Mountains for a picnic with my gorgeous wife and our twin girls, aged seven months. I am absolutely crazy about my three girls and love them so much. I’d round the weekend out with a bit of tennis. I’m head tennis coach at the Rob Fahey Tennis School and the junior development coach for Tennis Australia, which keeps me busy between work and family time. I have high hopes for my twins in the game – fast forward 17 years and we could have Australia’s version of the Williams sisters dominating world tennis!
What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?
Surprisingly and thankfully I have not had any strange lending scenarios. I think that goes to the quality of our broker network and the way they support customers.
How do you like your steak done?
Medium rare, ideally Tasmanian tenderloin or T-bone, with a fresh side salad and a serving of garlic bread.
Every Wednesday we’ll feature a different BDM from across Australia. If you’d like to be included, please email the editor.
