This week's Connective BDM for Perth has spent 16 years in the industry.
Connective BDM for Perth, Matt Cusworth travelled for 12 months through Africa after university before starting work as a real estate agent. "It was whilst working in real estate that I recognised the value that mortgage brokers provide consumers and as such changed my career path."
BDM in the spotlight asks a different BDM the same seven questions – giving you a weekly insight into the lives of some of the top BDMs in the country.
How often do you see brokers in a week?
Everyday. I average 4–5 meetings a day in my role as the WA Sales Manager for Connective. This is a combination of scheduled meetings with our WA members and lender partners, as well as meeting new people looking to join our industry or brokers looking to switch aggregators to Connective.
What do brokers want most from you?
They want their aggregator, and those of us who work for it, to be responsive, effective and accessible. I am proud of the way the WA team and the whole Connective business deliver our aggregation service and add value to our members as we continually challenge ourselves to do better.
What is your favourite part of the job?
I thoroughly enjoy meeting new people and helping our members grow their business. I would have to say, however, that my favourite part of this role is helping to find someone a new job within the portfolio. It is very gratifying to watch the people you’ve helped progress in their career and become more successful, whilst at the same time, adding value to our Member groups.
What distinguishes the best brokers you deal with?
The brokers who challenge the status quo – those who bring new ideas, zest and enthusiasm to their job really standout and set themselves apart.
Describe your ideal weekend
We love to travel – so ideally it would be exploring somewhere new. If at home I rise with the sun, and can’t sit still for too long. The day normally kicks off with an early run and then a dip in the ocean. Following bacon, I’d normally spend time working in the garden, followed by a ride on my motorbike, a beer with mates and then dinner with my wife, Kelly.
What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?
My wife’s firm and ongoing belief that cash from my wallet can, and should, be replaced with paper IOU’s and that these are redeemable. I have quite the collection.
How do you like your steak done?
The best steak I’ve ever had was in Buenos Aires, so in an ideal world it would be back there, served medium with a decent Malbec, and cooked by someone else…I’m not the world’s best chef.
