BDM for FactorONE Invoice Finance, Sean McGarry has spent 25 years in banking and financial services, with 17 of those in the mortgage industry and eight at Invoice Finance, a division of Scottish Pacific Business Finance.

How often do you see brokers in a week?
Daily.
What do brokers want most from you?
Reliability - doing what you say you will do.
What is your favourite part of the job?
The variety in all the different SME’s I get to deal with every single day. No two days are the same and nor are any two businesses. One morning I could be sitting in a boardroom meeting with four directors of a Labour Hire Business, then at midday meeting in a warehouse with a high-end fashion distributor, before finishing the day with a boutique wine wholesaler in their lounge room.
What distinguishes the best brokers you deal with?
They take the time to get to know the client and their business.
Describe your ideal weekend:
Spending time with my wife and 5 ½ kids (yes 6th on the way). And watching the Mighty Manly Sea Eagles win. Although I just discovered IMAX Theatre last weekend, so more movies there in the future for sure!
What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?
I have learnt over time that there is no such thing as a strange scenario, just unique. Every SME is different, with different goals & challenges. Recently I met with a business owner who had an opportunity to import & wholesale garden gnomes. But not just any gnomes…they were Star Wars characters.
How do you like your steak done?
Medium rare and with a glass of Penfolds 389 to wash it down with (on special occasions that is).
