The cyclists come from different firms, but have set aside business competition for a higher purpose

Broker cycling team rides 200km to conquer cancer

A group of brokers and industry members in WA have formed a team to participate in the “Ride to Conquer Cancer” next October. The event is a two-day, 200km bike ride from Victoria Park to Mandurah that aims to raise funds for the critical cancer research being done at Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. This year marks the event’s seventh year as it aims to surpass its $30m target.

Participants from all over the state will gather to hear stories from cancer researchers and survivors. “It’s staggering to hear over one third of Australians are diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime,” Launch Finance director and founder of ‘Finance Brokers Ride to Conquer Cancer’ Warrick Greaves told MPA.

“What inspired me to join was to help the Harry Perkins Institute continue its research and help fight this dreaded ’C’ word.”

Forming the team
Greaves was going to undertake the ride by himself at first, but then he realised he wanted to make it a bigger challenge and get more cyclists from WA’s finance industry involved.

“The more people involved, the greater the impact and the more money we raise for this wonderful charitable organisation,” Greaves said.

With the help of reliable and dedicated people, Greaves was able to form a standout team. It’s the first group of independent business people to come together to form a corporate team, according to one event organiser.

The team now sits fourth place among the top corporate teams. It still continues to grow despite already having 32 riders, plus a support crew from various WA businesses, including Launch Finance, Cohesive Finance, and Calculated Lending. The team also consists of members from lenders, aggregators, and the real estate sector.

A higher purpose
Although the team is made up of professionals from various agencies, its members decided not to display any business logos on their riding kit to ensure the ride solely focuses on the cause. “We’ve instead put the call out to lenders and businesses to sponsor the team in an effort to raise as much money as possible for a worthy cause,” Calculated Lending director and team member Bianca Patterson told MPA.

The two-day bike ride starts on 13 October. ‘Finance Brokers Ride to Conquer Cancer’ is still accepting members and sponsorship.
