For this week, MPA brings you advice from the industry's thought leaders - Warren Dworcan, on his biggest challenge and how he tackled it.
Each week MPA brings you advice from the industry's thought leaders on their biggest business challenge and how they tackled it. This week we speak to Warren Dworcan, director of Rate Detective Finance.
MPA: What has been one of your biggest challenges in business to date and why?
Warren Dworcan: Finding the right quality people to build the business and keep up with growth from a capital point of view. I am constantly looking for young people who don’t have that much experience but want to get into the industry. You generally find some people have experience and are strong in certain areas but need help in others. That’s why I try to tailor staff development for each person individually.
MPA: How did you overcome this challenge?
WD: Persistence, patience and hard work. It takes a little bit of luck and investigating the options, but having the right offering for each person and the right environment for them to work in goes a long way.
MPA: What are some of the key lessons you learnt from this experience?
WD: Nothing worthwhile comes easily. The whole journey is a learning experience and without going through it you can’t grow as people or individuals.
MPA: How have those lessons benefited you in business since?
WD: They have given me the tools and skills to overcome similar situations in the future.
MPA: If you had to tackle this again, would you do anything differently?
WD: No, otherwise I would not have learnt and grown.
MPA: What advice would you give to other brokers facing a similar situation?
WD: Be strategic and put time and emphasis on planning as well as being prepared to overcome hurdles. Stick to your plan but be willing to deviate with any change that may impact your original goals.
