New partnership to cut bills for social housing tenants

Western Sydney tenants in a 40-unit social housing complex are expected to save hundreds of pounds each year on utility bills due to a partnership between Great Southern Bank and Mission Australia.

The $1 million, three-year collaboration aims to deliver energy and efficiency upgrades to social housing complexes across Australia. The latest project in Mt Druitt was showcased in a video, featuring testimonials from tenants benefiting from the initiative.

Great Southern Bank’s head of branches and broker, Mat Patterson (pictured above left), said the upgrades reflect the bank’s commitment to community support and environmental sustainability.

“Over the past 12 months, we’ve made significant strides in becoming a more environmentally responsible bank. We’ve transitioned more of our branches and hubs to renewable energy, and recently launched a green home loan with a discounted rate,” Patterson said. “We’re excited to help Mission Australia tenants adopt energy-efficient measures to reduce living costs and emissions.”

The Mt Druitt complex marks the third major project under Great Southern Bank’s investment. The upgrades include a shared rooftop solar system, which distributes energy to each unit based on demand, enhancing efficiency.

Mitchell Dawson (pictured above right), strategic asset manager at Mission Australia Housing, said the improvements are already providing both cost savings and increased comfort for residents.

“Installing solar panels will make it more affordable for tenants to cool their apartments this summer,” Dawson said. “Early results from a previous project in Forster, NSW, show tenants saving about $500 annually.”

Throughout the partnership, Great Southern Bank will fund various energy-saving upgrades across Mission Australia properties, including solar panels, insulation, LED lighting, and energy meters.
