New initiative aims to protect Western Sydney communities, infrastructure, and economy from rising heat risks

Property Council backs plan to tackle urban heat

The Property Council of Australia has endorsed the launch of the Greater Sydney Heat Smart City Plan, calling it a key initiative to address the increasing threat of urban heatwaves in Western Sydney.

Katie Stevenson (pictured above), executive director of the Property Council’s New South Wales division and a member of the Greater Sydney Heat Taskforce, highlighted the vital role of the property sector in mitigating heatwave risks.

“The property sector is committed to advancing climate-focused principles and contributing to a more sustainable environment,” said Stevenson, who also stressed the need for any new frameworks or standards to be practical and supportive of economic growth.

“It’s essential these measures avoid placing unnecessary financial or delivery burdens on the industry,” she said.

The Property Council reiterated its commitment to climate resilience through its Every Building Counts initiative, which outlines policies aimed at achieving zero-carbon-ready and resilient buildings.

“We are excited to collaborate with the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils, Resilient Sydney, and others to develop a pathway that safeguards Western Sydney’s communities, infrastructure, and economy from extreme heat — Australia’s deadliest natural hazard,” Stevenson said.

She also lauded the Heat Smart City Plan for its focus on sustainable development and infrastructure resilience.

“This plan promotes innovative solutions and better data to address the growing challenges of heatwaves on urban resilience, public health, and productivity,” she said.

Stevenson called for a united approach, urging governments, private stakeholders, and the community sector to work together to mitigate the impacts of extreme heat. She emphasised the importance of balancing bold climate action with practical implementation to achieve meaningful results.
