State Manager in the Spotlight: Belinda Ng, Liberty

State Manager in the Spotlight and BDM in the Spotlight is a regular series, giving brokers insight into the lives of some of the country’s leading relationship managers.

The spotlight this week is on Belinda Ng, Liberty state sales manager for Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Ng has been working in financial services for more than 25 years and says she loves to visit brokers and hear about their successes and challenges and help them workshop deals.

“Being able to help brokers with a solution or provide insights to help them grow their business is always rewarding,” says Ng. “I love hearing feedback from brokers where we’ve helped clients achieve a goal they previously thought was elusive.”

She says the most successful brokers are those that have strong client engagement and business management skills, as well as great knowledge of the most appropriate lending solutions for their customers.

Full name: Belinda Ng
Job title: State sales manager WA, SA and NT
Company: Liberty
Number of years in the industry: 25+ years
Location: Perth

What did you do before entering the industry?

I was a solicitor at a law firm in Perth.

A brief description of your role and how you support brokers

I work with a team of experienced business development managers based in South Australia and Western Australia.

Together, we support brokers in those two states as well as the Northern Territory to help clients with funding requirements in the residential, commercial, business, SMSF and motor lending areas.

What is a goal that you aim to achieve in your role this year?

My team and I aim to engage with more brokers to help them explore the many ways Liberty can assist clients with flexible and innovative loan solutions and to diversify their businesses.

Often brokers focus on writing residential loans at the outset. The residential property market is much more competitive because of the supply shortage in the western states, so the need for brokers to diversify is even more compelling. My team and I welcome every opportunity to provide guidance to brokers on this front.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I love visiting brokers with our team. It provides me with the opportunity to hear directly from brokers about their successes and challenges, and often there are potential deals that need workshopping.

Being able to help brokers with a solution or provide insights to help them grow their business is always rewarding. I love hearing feedback from brokers where we’ve helped clients achieve a goal they previously thought was elusive.

What sets successful brokers apart?

Successful brokers are those who are really strong on customer engagement and business management. They are approachable, inquisitive, well-versed on the variety of lending solutions available and focused on finding the most appropriate solutions for clients.

In addition, they capably manage their business through the different stages of growth, calling in the required support when needed.

What should brokers be demanding from a BDM and lender relationship?

Brokers should expect their BDM and lender to provide reliable support and be responsive. In turn, this helps brokers provide a superior customer experience as they can then revert to clients with potential solutions in a timely manner.

What do you provide to brokers that makes you valuable to them?

Working on complex lending scenarios has provided me with a great foundation. I utilise those learnings to work with brokers and the Liberty team to help a wide spectrum of clients.

My law background trained me to be inquisitive and to have a mindset of asking deeper questions. This often helps me uncover issues that are not apparent at the outset and this clarity is critical in providing the most appropriate solutions.

Describe your ideal weekend

My ideal and typical weekend involves a combination of food, music and sport! We love supporting our son and daughter at their soccer and netball games and at times, dropping in to watch our eldest son playing at a gig.

Every Saturday night, we all catch up at a new restaurant or one of our favourite haunts to enjoy great food and talk about anything and everything.
