Award sponsor shares the attributes that new entrants can aspire to
The past 12 months have been challenging for us all, but for those new entrants to the broking industry, times have really been tough, according to Adelaide Bank head of broker distribution Raj Kapoor (pictured). He told MPA that having a successful broking business is in large part dependent on having an efficient operating rhythm and processes while delivering a personalised service. To do these things while going in and out of lockdown would be tough for brokers who don’t already have an established base of clients or industry connections, he said.
“Someone who is new to the industry has to come up with their own operating rhythm,” he said. “To find an operating rhythm in a year that has been stop/start depending on which state you’re in would definitely be hard.”
Kapoor said Adelaide Bank decided to sponsor Young Gun of the Year (independent) at the 2021 Australian Mortgage Awards for two main reasons. The first is the potential of what new talent can bring.

“The Young Gun of the Year award is close to my heart,” he said. “I believe the industry can always do with some fresh blood and I genuinely believe that fresh thinking, fresh ideas always keep continuous improvement going.”
The second is that Adelaide Bank is relatively new to having a national BDM presence, which aligns to the theme of the award.
When it came to being crowned Young Gun of the Year, Kapoor said there were several qualities new brokers should possess in order to be considered worthy of the title.
“I think somebody who is worthy of a Young Gun award has the ability to understand their business model, have contacts or at least be able to reach out and get support from the industry,” he said.
They should also demonstrate outstanding customer service and “very good control on their risk, processes and compliance,” he said.
