Why this regional broker keeps strict business hours

Robert Trewin, AMA 2017 Broker of the Year - Insurance (Mortgage Protection and Life) and managing director of his firm, Robert Trewin Mortgage Broking, has built a reputation as an expert when it comes to understanding people’s needs, and helping them get where they need to be.

“Being a regional broker, our team needs to be a jack of all trades when it comes to meeting clients’ financial needs,” Trewin told MPA. His expertise in loan protection and his relationship with ALI Group over the years has also contributed to the many life-changing deals he has made.

Free from distraction
Trewin conducts all interviews and loan document sign ups in his place of business between 9am and 5pm because he considers it the most efficient use of time for both him and his client. It allows him to cover everything a customer needs without distraction.

He doesn’t understand why other brokers consider his practice unique. He has been told that a lot of brokers leave the entire document sign up process to the customers to accomplish. “I personally prefer to take time to run documents through with clients to ensure they understand what they’re signing, and to cover any questions they might have. It gives me an opportunity to take a closer look at how I can protect their lives, income and home,” Trewin said.

Aside from working with a staff that’s as self-motivated as he is, Trewin feels fortunate because he gets to employ a wonderful CRM technology via National Mortgage Brokers (NMB) that allows his team to keep track of every file. Aside from the CRM, Trewin keeps a separate database so he can break down results and pipelines quickly during impromptu meetings.

Success beyond business accolades
But what Trewin considers his greatest achievement has nothing to do with his business or the awards he has won.

Raising almost $1m for his son Cooper’s charity, the Cooper Trewin Memorial SUDC Research Fund, and life-saving hospital programs his family has established gives him the greatest fulfilment.

Trewin works hard because he takes pride in what he does. He genuinely enjoys helping people on a daily basis. “All I want for the future is to be able to provide for my children, and have some good times along the way with work colleagues, friends and family,” he said.
