SFG's MD reflects on leadership, industry challenges, and the future of aggregation

Specialist Finance Group’s managing director, William Lockett, has once again secured a spot in MPA’s Mortgage Global 100 list - his fourth recognition after previous wins in 2020, 2022, and 2023. In a recent MPA TV interview, Lockett reflected on his career, leadership approach, and the evolving challenges in the mortgage aggregation industry.
"I love what I do, and I've been loving it for over 34 years," Lockett said. "I'd like to think that our business model has gained credibility and trust, not only within our own network but across the industry as well." His leadership has evolved to prioritise clear communication, collaboration, and adaptability - ensuring SFG remains at the forefront of industry changes.
Reflecting on the past year, Lockett highlighted the payroll tax issue in New South Wales as a major challenge. "We've been operating for 34 years, and it's only now become an issue. It’s very concerning for our industry," he said. SFG, alongside industry bodies, is working with federal and state governments to address this challenge and safeguard the future of mortgage broking.
Lockett believes that while compliance measures have increased post-Royal Commission, they have ultimately strengthened the industry. "Compliance is good business," he stated. "Since the Royal Commission, our industry has gotten stronger and more professional. We should be proud of how we’ve adapted." The introduction of best interest duties has led to record-low complaints against mortgage brokers, reinforcing the professionalism of the sector.
SFG has leveraged cutting-edge technology, including SFG Connect powered by SalesTrekker, to drive efficiency and maintain strong connections with brokers, lenders, and consumers. "Technology plays a vital role in any business today, and the tools we use at SFG help us stay ahead," Lockett said.
Lockett’s vision for SFG is clear: continuous improvement. "Our goal today is to be a better aggregator than we were yesterday," he said. "We’re always looking for ways to improve while staying true to what we do best."
