Government offers $50,000 in prizes for outstanding research
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) has opened the application portal for its annual Housing Research Awards competition.
This year's theme for the President's Medal for Outstanding Housing Research is "Improving the Financial Viability and Sustainability of Affordable Housing in Canada."
The awards recognize outstanding Canadian housing research, training programs, knowledge-sharing initiatives and outreach activities deemed impactful and innovative. Administered by CMHC on behalf of the Government of Canada as part of the National Housing Strategy (NHS), the program includes three awards:
- CMHC President's Medal for Outstanding Housing Research — 2024 Theme: Improving the Financial Viability and Sustainability of Affordable Housing in Canada - $25,000
- Gold Roof Award for Housing Research Excellence - $12,500
- Gold Roof Award for Knowledge to Action - $12,500
"We want to support research that will deepen our understanding of the barriers and potential solutions to improving the financial viability and sustainability of affordable housing in Canada,” CMHC acting president and CEO Michel Tremblay said in a media release.
“Better and more widely available information on housing will improve the ability of governments and housing providers to facilitate access to affordable housing for those who need it most."
The awards aim to build and sustain Canada's culture of housing research across key fields like social sciences, humanities, health and technology.
A panel of experts from academia, the private sector, non-profits, and the public sector will review applications using rigorous criteria to identify projects with the greatest potential impact on housing affordability and meeting Canadians' housing needs.
