Quebec town breaks ground on affordable senior housing

Over $6.7m invested to support senior living

Quebec town breaks ground on affordable senior housing

Construction has begun on 16 new social and affordable housing units for semi-independent seniors in Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes.

The project, called À l’ombre du clocher, is spearheaded by Maison À l’ombre du clocher and represents a total investment of over $6.7 million, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) reported.

The Quebec government is contributing more than $3.5 million, including $1.3 million through the Société d’habitation du Québec’s AccèsLogis program. The federal government is adding $1.3 million through the Rapid Housing Initiative, while the Municipality of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes provides over $2.5 million.

Quebec minister responsible for housing, France-Élaine Duranceau, commented: “Our government is sparing no effort to ensure that more Quebecers are able to enjoy a quality living environment.”

Federal minister of housing, infrastructure and communities, Sean Fraser, highlighted the importance of the Rapid Housing Initiative, saying, “The investment announced today will help semi-independent seniors access housing adapted to their needs in their own community.”

"I'm very proud of our government's involvement in projects like this, as it's a strong demonstration of our commitment to ensuring no one is left behind," said François St-Louis, member of the National Assembly for Joliette.

The project has been over 15 years in the making, driven by committed local citizens. "This is a dream come true for many citizens of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes," said Pierre Guilbault, the town's mayor.

"The board is extremely proud to see this seniors' residence created in our community, giving our elders the chance to live, age and thrive here," added Carole Paradis, chair of À l'ombre du clocher's board.

The project is expected to provide much-needed affordable housing for seniors in the community, allowing them to age in place with dignity and support.
