Another $25 million will see to the construction of 500 new homes across Canada
Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Ahmed Hussen, Member of Parliament Mississauga—Malton Igwinder Gaheer, and Habitat for Humanity Canada have announced a $25 million federal investment to build 500 new affordable homes across Canada over the next three years.
The announcement extends a previous government investment in Habitat for Humanity worth $55.8 million which funded the creation of 617 affordable housing units across the country. This investment included an initial payment of $32.4 million for the construction of 417 homes in 2019 – right before the pandemic – and a top-up of $3.4 million in 2020. In the same year, the Government of Canada shelled out another $20 million to create 200 homeownership opportunities for Black Canadians.

All mentioned government investments in Habitat for Humanity Canada were completed through the National Housing Strategy’s national housing co-investment fund, an NHS program that prioritizes the most vulnerable sectors of society, including women and children fleeing family violence, seniors, Indigenous peoples, young adults, people living with disabilities, and those with addiction issues.
Habitat for Humanity Canada is a non-governmental and non-profit organization that has aimed to provide affordable housing across the country since its establishment in Manitoba in 1985. Habitat for Humanity homes are energy-efficient, with one in five built specifically to meet accessibility standards, through government contributions and donations from partners and volunteers.
“We are pleased to continue our partnership with Habitat for Humanity Canada to help more Canadians achieve their dream of homeownership,” said Hussen. “This partnership has already had a positive impact on the lives of those families who now have an affordable home. We are committed to working with our partners to create more affordable housing options for Canadians from coast to coast to coast. This is just one of the many ways our government’s national housing strategy continues to ensure no-one is left behind.”
Gaheer added: “Our government believes that all Canadians deserve a safe place to call home. Across the country, we are working with our partners to build the affordable housing needed to create healthy, sustainable communities. Thanks to today’s announcement and our partnership with Habitat for Humanity Canada, hundreds of families will be able to enjoy a safe and stable environment across the country, leading to better outcomes, greater community engagement, and cohesion.”
