New housing supply to primarily cater to the region’s most at-need individuals
Federal and provincial authorities have announced $5 million in funding for the development of new housing supply for Brandon, Manitoba.
Brandon was one of the 41 recipients of the third round of the Rapid Housing Initiative’s city stream, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
“As part of its investment plan for the Major Cities Stream, the city of Brandon has partnered with Infrastructure Canada, the John Howard Society of Brandon, and Manitoba Hydro to approve the construction of the John Howard Society of Brandon (in partnership with Westman Youth for Christ) Transitional Housing Project,” CMHC said.
The project is slated to come with new transitional housing units, which will be primarily for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
“The government of Canada is investing in affordable housing here in Brandon and across Canada to help create jobs and improve the quality of life for those who need it most,” said Kevin Lamoureux, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg North. “With our partners, we are providing a helping hand for individuals and families in need, and in doing so, we are contributing to the economic and social well-being of the entire community.”
The RHI, which was launched in 2020, saw its first two rounds significantly exceeding expectations. CMHC said that the success of the rounds is anticipated to create more than 10,000 units, instead of the 7,500 originally planned.
