BoC sounds alarm on email scam

The Bank of Canada warned the public of the growing risk of phishing emails, which illicitly gather important personal information

In a press brief released on Tuesday (March 1), the Bank of Canada warned consumers to be wary of a digital scam that is currently spreading via email and social networks.

BoC officials advised online users to avoid any links in online messages that use the institution’s name, letterhead, and logo, as these links are actually mechanisms that illicitly extract data such as financial information or personal details—an online threat known as “phishing”.

As reported by CBC News, the Bank emphasized that it would never collect vital information through email or social media. It also further warned the public that it does not accept any deposits from individuals, only from government agencies and financial organizations.

The advisory came in the wake of several Canadians’ complaints, wherein they were duped by swindlers who posed as agents of the Canada Revenue Agency and demanded compensation for supposedly unpaid "back taxes".

The Bank encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity or individuals by reaching out to its Public Information Office at 1-800-303-1282.
