Paul Henderson’s Hockey Marathon of Hope scores a win for families and children in need – and one industry player laced up to play an integral role in shaping the event.

“I just coordinated and participated in the 9th annual Paul Henderson’s Hockey Marathon of Hope, which was hosted in Abbotsford, B.C., on September 7, 2013,” Geoff Lee of the Mortgage Broker Group told MortgageBrokerNews.ca. “This is a fundraiser that is supporting two great organizations:  IMANI Orphan Care, which was founded in 2010 by myself and my wife and Doing Family Right , a local non-profit organization committed to giving families valuable encouragement toward remaining healthy in their relationships.

The marathon helped raise over $71,000 for needy families and children both in Canada and in Kenya and, over the course of its nine years, has raised over half a million dollars.

And being endorsed and supported by Paul Henderson, one of Canada’s most recognizable NHL hockey players, hasn’t hindered its success. The sports legend best known for that winning goal in the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union continues to boost support for the marathon --a popular event attended by dozens of people who use their love of hockey for a good cause.

“We have 64 players and over 40 volunteers to make this event happen,” Lee said. “ Each player is committed to a 10 hour marathon playing 8 games with only 20 minute intervals between each game and  each player commits to raise a minimum of a $1,000, with some players raising as much as $6,000 by themselves! “
