It’s some way off, but new figures from Statistics Canada predict that the population could hit 63.5 million by 2063. That figure is the upper limit but there is real expectation of a figure around 50 million, depending on factors including birth and death rates and immigration. StatsCan predict that in the short term population growth may slow as death rates in an ageing population outpace births and immigration. Between 2013 and 2038, most provinces and territories would see their populations increase, while some of the Atlantic provinces and some territories would experience population decline in certain scenarios. Ontario will continue to be the most populous area of Canada, while Alberta will surpass BC and have a far lower percentage of seniors. Where there is growth in population it will be largely driven by migration.
