Gang claiming responsibility claims it stole 755GB of data from the company
A real estate and property management company based in Calgary, AB has fallen victim to a ransomware attack which may have compromised some of its confidential data.
Ronmor Holdings confirmed in a release that it was hit by the malware in late September.
“I can confirm that in late September we learned that Ronmor was the victim of a ransomware attack on our systems and company network,” Ronmor Holdings CEO Dallas Wingerak said in an email statement. “We immediately launched a comprehensive investigation into this data breach and have retained a highly experienced group of third-party cybersecurity experts to support our efforts.”
IT World Canada reported that Ronmor’s confirmation of a malware attack came after the REvil ransomware gang posted a notice on its data leak site last month, which claimed that the group had downloaded 755GB from Ronmor’s servers.
“While this investigation is still in its early stages, it currently appears that some private and confidential company data was compromised in this attack,” said Wingerak in her statement.
“We want to sincerely apologize for any stress, anxiety and inconvenience this has caused to employees, tenants, partners and other stakeholders. We have been working around the clock to ascertain what happened, contain the impact and determine exactly what data may have been stolen.”
The CEO added that as Ronmor’s investigation continues, it plans to individually contact tenants, partners, and vendors whose data may have been compromised due to the ransomware-breach incident. Wingerak also commented that although ransomware can be distracting for any affected company, Ronmor’s business is “as strong as ever.”
Wingerak did not elaborate on how the ransomware attack started, nor did she mention whether the data copied by the threat actors included personally identifiable information, IT World Canada said. The chief executive also did not specify whether the REvil gang was contacted, or whether a ransom was paid.
