The housing benefit program aims to provide support to thousands of households over the next few years

CMHC launches lifeline for New Brunswick’s low-income working families

CMHC has announced that the Canada-New Brunswick Housing Benefit is now available for applications from low-income working families in New Brunswick.

The short-term benefit will average between $300 to $475 per month, with the exact amount to be determined based on household income, composition, and location.

“The program aims to support about 6,700 households in the province over the next seven years,” CMHC said. “This represents an investment of more than $98.3 million equally shared between the provincial and federal governments.”

Applicants must:

  • be living and working in New Brunswick
  • be a parent with primary custody of a child/children under 19, or of one or more dependents with a disability 19 or older
  • rent where they live
  • not receive a housing subsidy from the Department of Social Development
  • be working and earning a minimum of $14,200 per year and a maximum of $38,000 before tax household employment income
  • have their income reported to Canada Revenue Agency.
  • be the only person in their household applying for and receiving the benefit

“The objective of this program is to provide financial assistance to families to improve their quality of life,” said Bruce Fitch, Minister of Social Development. “This joint effort between our government and the federal government will provide support to families searching for suitable housing and enhanced working opportunities.”
