Housing can contribute to climate-mitigation strategies, Crown corporation says
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has announced the launch of its annual Housing Research Awards, with this year’s contest focusing on solutions involving the dynamics between housing and climate change.
“Climate change is increasingly posing challenges to housing in Canada. By encouraging mitigation and adaptation, we will contribute to Canada’s climate change goals and make housing safer and more resilient,” said Steve Mennill, the Crown corporation’s chief climate officer.
Mennill said that housing can contribute to mitigating the myriad impacts of climate change, particularly though the development of more “climate compatible” solutions and the reduction of emissions from the nation’s buildings.
“The theme ‘Housing and Climate Change’ will highlight research that deepens our understanding of challenges such as extreme weather events and adapting to climate-related risks in the future,” CMHC said in its announcement.

“CMHC aims to take a leadership role in steering Canada toward a less carbon-intensive housing system while also helping our country prepare for the inevitable changes that are already in motion,” Mennill added.
As part of the federal government’s National Housing Strategy, the initiative will provide funding for impactful research that CMHC deems “will help foster a better understanding of housing needs and solutions.”
Interested parties and institutions can submit their entries for the Housing Research Awards until Friday, July 29, 4:00 pm EST. Winning entries will be announced in the fall.
