New Edmonton Veterans' Village to cater to uniformed personnel easing themselves back to civilian life
New housing supply just became available in Edmonton through a $1 million federal investment from the Affordable Housing Innovation Fund.
The recent launch of the Edmonton Veterans’ Village, which was developed by the Homes for Heroes Foundation, was in response to the growing number of Canadian veterans “who are facing crisis as they return to civilian life, and often find themselves at risk of homelessness,” said Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

The affordable homes of the Edmonton Veterans’ Village are arranged in an inward-facing, “barracks format” designed to facilitate peer-to-peer support, CMHC said. Each home will also be fully equipped with all of the features that veterans looking to ease themselves back into civilian life will need.
“The village will also incorporate a community garden, as well as a central resource centre and counselling office, which will provide full-service, wrap-around programs that will deliver the resources, training and counselling necessary to ensure each individual’s success in their transition to civilian life,” CMHC said.
“Our investments will go a long way to support our veterans who need it most by quickly providing new affordable housing units to those experiencing, or at risk of homelessness,” said Randy Boissonnault, member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, minister of tourism and associate minister of finance. “Our government's plan under the National Housing Strategy continues to provide housing for Canadians from coast to coast to coast, including in right here in Edmonton.”
