Kingston, ON to receive major supply boost
Federal and provincial governments, together with local housing development groups, have announced a combined investment of more than $50 million to support the rapid construction of 130 housing units across two projects in Kingston, Ontario.
The government of Canada accounted for nearly $30 million of this sum, which will focus on addressing the housing needs of priority groups, including women and children.
The projects are located at 1316-1318 Princess Street. The first project, which will be a 92-unit complex, will be operated by Kingston & Frontenac Housing Corporation. The building benefited from $19.6 million in federal funding through the National Housing Co-Investment Fund and $11.1 million from the Kingston city government.
“The project will have an office on the ground floor where a tenant support services program will assist and support residents experiencing health, mental health, and addictions issues by providing assessment, crisis and intervention services, and engaging other community services and resources,” according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
The second project, a 38-unit building, will be operated by Kingston Co-operative Homes. This project received $9.4 million in federal funding through the NHCF, $4.2 million from the Kingston government, and $1.3 million from Kingston Co-operative Homes Inc., which has pledged to protect affordability of the homes for the long term.
“Getting affordable and supportive housing built is one of our top priorities as a city,” said Kingston mayor Bryan Paterson. “These two projects are huge for our community. Multiple organizations and levels of government are coming together to move these projects forward and it wouldn’t be possible without their support.”
