Governments release substantial funding for Toronto rapid housing

In line with the National Housing Strategy, federal and local governments have announced a substantial multi-million investment in low-rise apartment housing in Toronto.

The approximately $14 million in funding will be coursed through the Major Cities Stream of the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI), and will support the immediate development of 51 affordable low-rise apartment homes.

“[These units] will be part of innovative and cost-effective modular supportive housing build located at 150 Dunn Avenue, for those who are exiting or at risk of homelessness, with a focus on seniors, women and racialized persons,” Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation said in its announcement. “Modular supportive housing provides a rapid, dignified response to connect people experiencing, and at risk of, homelessness with homes and appropriate supports to help them achieve housing stability.”

Aside from CMHC and the governments, the Dunn Avenue project will also be supported by the University Health Network Gattuso Centre for Social Medicine and the United Way of Greater Toronto.

The site will also see support services developed by the University Health Network Gattuso Centre for Social Medicine, the Toronto municipal government, and various community partners.

These support services “will incorporate a range of health and social services to be delivered onsite,” CMHC said. “Through this partnership with UHN, residents will also be connected to primary care and other health services within the hospital’s Parkdale campus.”
