ING Direct is asking its customers to help the flood victims of southern Alberta – and hoping to cash in on some of the goodwill from mortgage brokers, too.
“I know we’ve transitioned out of the channel,” says Andrew Zimakas, CMO of ING Direct responsible for community investment, “but if there are any brokers out there we’ve dealt with in the past, I’d like to ask them to help out. It would be appreciated.”
Peter Aceto, president of ING Direct, tweeted Monday morning that ING would be matching donations from its customers to the Red Cross up to $25,000 for flood victims.
“We’ve provided a simple way to do it by adding a button on their account summary page, ‘I Want To Help’,” says Zimakas. “There has been a significant amount of damage from the flooding, and although our office (Calgary Café) was not in the flood-affected area, we have been closed since Friday.”
CAAMP has donated $5,000 on behalf of its members to the Canadian Red Cross for flood relief. Of the some 12,000 members in CAAMP nationwide, 1,400 live in Alberta.
“We have all been affected by the pictures on TV of the extensive flooding in Southern Alberta,” says Jim Murphy, president of CAAMP. “At times like this we all need to be as supportive as we can for those who have been impacted.”

The Alberta premier Alison Redford has pledge $1 billion in flood relief, while Ottawa has made available 1,200 military personnel to help in relief efforts.
