For Tristan Kirk, of Citadel Mortgages, the strongest relationships between lenders and brokers are established on a foundation of efficiency, transparency, and openness to improvement.
“I actually think more lenders should hold brokers accountable on how they submit their applications,” Kirk told Canadian Mortgage Professional. “And making sure that the notes and documents are detailed, because at the end of the day, we’re moving into more of an online generation platform and it’s easier to get what we need to.”
Such communication and collaboration is necessary if the industry is to remain relevant, Kirk argued.

“I would love to see more lenders have those tough conversations with brokers and hold them accountable for their business,” Kirk said. “That will make it easier for us, people like myself and my brokers, [to] continuously do a great job. We should get everyone on that same page, and [get] everyone [to have] better efficiencies at the end of the day.”
This culture of transparency should influence every facet of the business, Kirk stressed.
“I think what we as brokers are looking for in this day and age is flexibility on schedule,” he said. “Being able to communicate because we’re working longer hours, we’re working weekends, we’re working all kinds of different things that are going on in the market… It keeps us busy, right? So having lenders that are flexible with us, that’s going to be the game changer moving forward.”
