Manitoba unemployment rate in May lowest in the country – StatsCan

Surpassing economists’ projections, Canadian employment grew by 0.6 per cent on a year-over-year basis in May, according to the latest StatsCan information

Updated information released by Statistics Canada on June 10 showed that joblessness in Manitoba plummeted to the lowest level in the country after the province enjoyed a net gain of almost 3,000 new jobs in May.

In a Canadian Press report published by the Winnipeg Free Press, the StatsCan monthly labour force survey for May revealed that Manitoba’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.9 per cent, from 6.1 per cent in April, after the addition of 1,900 full-time and 1,100 part-time posts to the province’s workforce.

Surpassing economists’ projections, Canadian employment grew by 0.6 per cent on a year-over-year basis in May, with an overall gain of 13,800 jobs nationwide that pulled the national joblessness rate down from 7.1 per cent to 6.9 per cent. Full-time positions increased by 60,500, while part-time work declined by 46,800.

Employee positions grew by 24,800 in May, but self-employment fell by 11,100 jobs. On the other hand, highly sought-after private-sector posts decreased by 5,200, even as 30,200 new public-sector jobs were added.

Meanwhile, Alberta suffered significant economic decline after the Fort McMurray wildfire forced oilsands facilities to shut down, with unemployment rising to 7.8 per cent last month after a loss of 24,100 jobs in the province.
