New suspect photo released in investigation into Vaughan broker's murder

York Regional Police (YRP) have released new evidence in the unsolved 2023 homicide of Vaughan mortgage broker Rakesh “Rick” Joshi, renewing their appeal to the public for information that could help close the case.

Joshi, 50, was found dead inside a residence near Laskin Drive and Ilan Ramon Boulevard on September 1, 2023, after police responded to a call at the property. Investigators determined he had suffered a “significant head injury.”

Nearly two years later, police say they’ve made progress. On Wednesday, YRP released an image of a suspect connected to the case, along with a photo of a black 2006-2009 Porsche 911 Turbo believed to be linked to the homicide.

Const. James Dickson confirmed in an interview with CP24 that the images were captured on August 31, 2023, the day before Joshi’s body was discovered. However, police only recently confirmed the vehicle and suspect’s relevance to the investigation.

“Even though this case is now almost two years old, we’re still working this,” said Dickson. “This is still very active. This is still very open, and our investigators are moving forward with it.”

According to police, Joshi was already deceased for approximately 24 hours before being discovered by officers, which is why the surveillance timestamp predates the discovery.

The renewed plea comes as detectives seek new witnesses or anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage from the area who has not yet come forward.

“You never know what piece of the puzzle is going to be what finishes at us,” Dickson said. “Even a small piece of information would be very helpful.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact the YRP homicide unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7865, or provide an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
