Seven-storey residential complex to provide affordable housing for low-income and vulnerable women
The federal government has announced an $11.37-million investment on the development of housing units primarily intended for Vancouver's low-income and vulnerable women.
The funding will be used in the construction of the Women & Families Centre run by Union Gospel Mission, with a total of 63 housing units for low-income women, women with children, and women dealing with mental health or addiction issues.
This will be a 77,000-square-foot, seven-storey building that will be required to maintain affordable rents for all of its units for at least 60 years, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

“Union Gospel Mission will provide tenants with 24/7 on-site support for women in drug and alcohol recovery, support for the children of women in recovery (trauma counselling, licensed childcare services, after school programming), family building activities, job readiness programming and many other resources,” CMHC said.
“I’m most excited about being able to provide a culturally aware and trauma informed environment for women and children for up to a five-year continuum of care, where they can feel accepted, seen, known and enjoy relationships and support as they walk on this journey of becoming,” said Tara MacDonald, senior manager of women’s recovery and housing at Union Gospel Mission.
