The government has taken action to address affordability issues in Toronto, a mere month since the government unveiled its new housing plan
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation announced the grand opening of a new affordable rental building in Toronto Wednesday.
“Our Government is investing in affordable housing here in Toronto and across Canada to help create jobs and improve the quality of life for those who need it most,” Judy Sgro, Member of Parliament for Humber River-Black Creek, said. “Thanks to the combined efforts of our partners, we are able to give a helping hand to individuals in need, and in doing so, we are contributing to the economic and social well-being of the entire community.”
The homes at Casa Emery Village will be in a mixed-use facility consisting of 348 units designated for seniors and new Canadians.
Premier Kathleen Wynne, along with Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa, announced Ontario’s “Fair Housing Plan” -- which includes 16 new housing policies -- in Toronto in late April.
Many are meant to addressing affordability through increasing rental supply.
“Ontario continues to be a strong partner to the City of Toronto, delivering efficient, people-centred housing programs for residents so they can continue to put down roots in the neighbourhoods they love,” Chris Ballard, Ontario’s Minister of Housing and Minister Responsible for the Poverty Reduction Strategy, said. “Working together, we can ensure that every family has an affordable place to live in the city they call home.”

The Government of Canada contributed nearly $36.7 million in funding to the project and the City of Toronto contributed an additional $7.1 million.
“I want to thank the team at Medallion Corporation for their dedication to building quality affordable housing in Toronto,” Ana Bailão, Chair, City of Toronto Affordable Housing Committee, said. “It is only through strong and ongoing commitments from our provincial, federal and development partners that the City can succeed in providing suitable housing for all residents.”
