A multimillion-dollar tranche has been set aside for the development of a three-storey housing complex
Local governments and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation have announced an investment of $4.9 million in the development of affordable housing units for individuals and families in Chatham-Kent.
The funding, which was provided under the Rapid Housing Initiative, will support the construction of 27 permanent low-cost homes at 99 McNaughton Avenue West. These units will primarily serve the most vulnerable members of society, officials said.
“[The project] will ensure that vulnerable individuals, women, and families have the support they need to live comfortably,” said Marci Ien, minister for women and gender equality and youth. “Our government is fully committed to tackling the serious issue of gender-based violence, and the National Housing Strategy is a key piece of building a safer Canada for women and gender-diverse people.”

The three-storey project will arise on existing municipally owned lands, and the building will be operated by the municipal government of Chatham-Kent.
“Ensuring there are affordable housing options to meet a variety of needs’ is a priority of Chatham-Kent’s Council,” said Darrin Canniff, mayor of Chatham-Kent. “We look forward to working with CMHC to provide suitable housing for seniors, particularly those fleeing abusive situations, within the next 12 months.”
