Brokers who are active on Twitter – and those who aren’t yet – have an opportunity to reach hundreds of thousands of people by taking part in a fraud chat hosted by FSCO and the Toronto Police Service every Thursday.
“It’s an opportunity for anyone that has any kind of messages about fraud prevention or awareness to chime in and share those with the public,” Kristen Rose, senior communications officer at the Financial Services Commission of Ontario told MortgageBrokerNews.ca. “We know on average that our weekly fraud chat reaches about 746,000 people based on analysis that we’ve done.
“It’s just a really good opportunity for anyone in financial services or any organization that has fraud prevention material to share.”
For Fraud Prevention Month, FSCO and the Toronto Police have joined forces to educate the public about various fraud issues. #Fraudchat is open to all members of the public and anyone can participate by using the hashtag every Thursday from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. EST on Twitter; a great opportunity for brokers to reach potential clients by offering advice and commentary on a number of issues.
“We’re going to cover what to do if you’re a victim of fraud and we’ve got a senior officer from the RCMP who is going to be our guest expert on that topic; as well as a member of the Canadian anti-fraud centre,” Rose said. “We’re also going to be talking about red flags, generally speaking, in terms of how to spot a potential fraudster/scammer.
“The final week of March we’re going to be talking about fraud prevention resources … and we’ve got an internet security expert by the name of Rob Cairns who is going to be our guest expert for that topic.”
