Regina affordable housing project launched by federal and local governments

Project is slated to help Regina families with complex needs

In cooperation with city officials and the Gabriel Housing Corporation, the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan recently opened six new rental units in Regina, intended for families with complex needs.

In a July 28 news release published online by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the public officials—which included the Honourable Ralph Goodale, legislative assembly member Muhammad Fiaz, and Regina mayor Michael Fougere—officially opened for use a facility that features two 2-bedroom units, three 3-bedroom units, and two 4-bedroom units.

Situated at 2059 Edward Street, the project was completed with a $758,000 endowment by the Gabriel Housing Corporation for mortgage financing and land equity, along with a $90,000 from Regina’s coffers.

“The new units will enable Gabriel Housing Corporation to further meet the demand for quality, safe and affordable housing, reduce the number of Aboriginal families on our wait list and provide the necessary support services to the families so that they can maintain and live in a healthy home environment,” Gabriel Housing Corporation CEO Doug Moran said.

“Through investments in affordable housing, our Government is providing assistance to those who need it most here in Saskatchewan and in all corners of the country. With our partners, we are providing a helping hand for families in need, and in doing so, we are contributing to the economic and social well-being of the entire community,” Goodale added.

The building will incorporate support services that will promote healthy lifestyles among families, as well as provide for their recreational and spiritual needs.
