Study examined thousands of GTA property listings as a baseline
In its newly released report, real estate brokerage firm TheRedPin outlined the best places to live in Toronto for commuters.
The locales feature a combination of relative affordability, spaciousness, and proximity to the downtown area. To create the list, TheRedPin consulted thousands of property listings in the GTA, and compared purchase prices, average commuting times to downtown Toronto, and average property price per square foot.
Ajax led the pack in this metric, with the average price currently at $719,666.67 and the average commuting time per day at 145.0 minutes. Pickering ($775,733.35 / 132.5 minutes) and Whitby ($764,807.50 / 172.5 minutes) came next in the rankings, followed by Maple, Vaughan ($1,291,174.69 / 150.0 minutes) and Port Perry, Scugog ($1,034,271.70 / 192.5 minutes).
However, TheRedPin added that lower commuting times tend to offset higher prices in terms of homes’ attractiveness to would-be buyers, which is why shopping around and experimenting with commuting routes remain sensible choices.
“Homebuyers looking for homes for sale in Toronto shouldn’t be put off from exploring buying property in other areas. One thing our research shows is that houses in the suburbs can be more expensive than those close to downtown Toronto. It's worth exploring our map to find the town that suits you best,” according to Hyder Owainati of TheRedPin.
On the flip side, the study identified Milton, Oshawa, Oakville, Keswick, and Burlington as the least ideal locales for commuters.
