It will build over 3,000 housing units over the next three years
The Canadian government and the city of Mississauga have announced an agreement which will lead to the fast tracking of over 3,000 housing units over the next three years.
Through the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), the deal will provide nearly $113 million which will be used to remove barriers to the quicker construction of housing.
“Today’s announcement will help fast track over 3,000 homes in the next three years and over 35,200 homes over the next decade. By working with cities, mayors, and all levels of government, we are helping to get more homes built for Canadians at prices they can afford,” said Sean Fraser, minister of housing, infrastructure, and communities.
Overall, the HAF will help in cutting red tape and fast tracking the construction of at least 100,000 approved new homes over three years. Cities and regions estimate that it will allow for the creation of over 250,000 homes across Canada.
“By building more affordable homes more quickly, our government is unlocking new opportunities for growth in Mississauga,” said Rechie Valdez, minister of small business, member of parliament for Mississauga-Streetsville.
Mississauga’s Action Plan, which is comprised of a mix of short-term and long-term initiatives considering the regions with increasing housing demand and need for transformational change in density, will commit to eight local initiatives that will allow a variety of housing forms and densities to meet the needs of the community. The initiatives aim to accomplish the following:
- support programs for affordable housing
- expand permissions to streamline the creation of missing middle housing in existing residential neighbourhoods
- accelerate approval turnaround times, and
- contribute to the comprehensive review of land in the city to unlock additional transformational density.
“Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home and our National Housing Strategy is helping build more homes, faster,” said Charles Sousa, member of parliament for Mississauga-Lakeshore.
“This investment will support healthy communities and ensure more Mississauga families have an opportunity to pursue their dreams and create brighter futures,” he added.
