What is Canada's latest population figure?

Canada’s population grew by more than 430,000 during the third quarter (up by 1.1% quarterly), bringing the total population to around 40.528 million as of October 1, according to the national statistics agency.

The Q3 surge marked the fastest quarterly pace of increase since Q2 1957, which posted a 1.2% increase at the time, Statistics Canada said.

Canada’s year-to-date population growth as of October 1 exceeded 1.030 million, a total that was already higher than any full-year period since 1867.

The population increased in all regions except in the Northwest Territories (down by 0.5%). Regions that saw population growth rates exceeding the national level of 1.1% included Alberta (up by 1.3%), Prince Edward Island (up by 1.2%), and Ontario (up by 1.2%).

StatCan cited international migration as the major driver of Canada’s population growth: Fully 96% of Q3 population growth was due to international migration.

“The contribution of natural increase to population growth is expected to remain low in the coming years because of population aging, lower fertility levels, and the high number of immigrants and non-permanent residents coming to Canada,” StatCan said.

In the third quarter alone, Canada welcomed 107,972 newcomers. From January to September 2023, immigration levels stood at 79.8% (371,299) of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s target of 465,000 immigrants for this year.
