Canada Post is planning to roll out community mailboxes nationwide but a document leaked to the Financial Post reveals that they may damage house prices. Although the boxes have been around since the 1980’s and are a common site in many suburban communities, there increased use in urban areas could have an impact. The leaked document is an internal communication from The Canadian Union of Postal Workers whose members will lose out from the increased use of the mailboxes. The document quotes an un-named appraiser and states: “It is my professional opinion that community mailbox will have a negative impact on demand and pricing for residential homes.” The expert then notes that this is anecdotal currently. A spokesman for Canada Post says that there hasn’t been an impact on the use of community mailboxes in the four decades since they were introduced. Read the full story.
