Toronto project to serve as a pilot for urban sustainability, resiliency, and innovation

An urban revitalization organization in Toronto has announced that it is now open to proposals for its upcoming community development project, which is meant to serve as a “testbed for emerging technologies, materials and processes” that would answer the challenge of developing a more “sustainable, accessible, inclusive and prosperous” dwelling scheme for large numbers of people.
In a March 17 CNW press release, Waterfront Toronto said that it will be launching the Quayside waterfront community amid the city’s fevered pace of population and job growth.
“[Demand] for space continues to outpace supply. In response, the city’s post-industrial waterfront is transforming into a compelling destination with a number of high-quality residential and commercial developments, best-in-class technology infrastructure, and vibrant public spaces,” the news release stated.
Waterfront Toronto’s request for proposals will be looking for a funding partner, which can be “an individual organization, a joint venture, consortium or other legal arrangement.” The venture will culminate in “advancing ambitious, high-level objectives.”
Among these aspirations for the 4.9 hectare (12 acre) Quayside is serving as an archetype for urban sustainability, resiliency, and innovation by creating “a globally significant demonstration project that advances a new market model for climate-positive urban developments.”
Quayside is meant to pilot “leading sustainability and resiliency practices that address local, national and global carbon emission reduction targets,” which will “incorporate technology advancements that enhance efficiencies and improve the overall quality of life for citizens, employees, students and visitors to the area.”
More importantly, the project will represent “a significant opportunity to generate prosperity by continuing to build the emerging technology-based economic hubs on the waterfront, including employers and job creators in the green technology, film and television production, digital media and information technology sectors.”
