Broker finds love on the job

Taranaki-based Rosie Glasgow met her future husband when she reviewed his mortgage

Broker finds love on the job
Taranaki-based Rosie Glasgow discusses her most memorable client experience (meeting her future husband) and what she’s do if she was the Prime Minister for the day.

Q: Who or what has inspired you to become a mortgage broker?
A:
After years working as a lender at a mainstream bank, I developed a huge passion for helping clients to navigate their way onto the property market. Being able to meet a first-home buyer and educate them to a point that they are almost experts themselves is so rewarding, and I just couldn't dream of another career path! So, I guess it was a no-brainer!

Q: What is the best part of being a broker?
A:
It’s definitely the flexibility and lifestyle

Q: What’s the hardest, most challenging part?
A:
Being part of a client’s housing journey and seeing them find their perfect house, but also missing out at multi-offer or auction.

Q: What do you think has been the secret to your professional success?
A:
Being genuine, always putting clients first and working hard to find solutions. If clients walk away feeling good about the experience, then they refer their friends and family – success just grows from there.

Q: Tell us briefly about your company and its role in the mortgage industry. What makes it different from other companies in the same space?
A:
I’m Taranaki born and bred, so I understand that my clients’ lifestyles and needs are different to people living in bigger cities. I offer a personalised service and always make sure we handle applications face-to-face. It's not about assisting clients with a one-off property purchase. It’s about working together and being an integral part of their housing journey over the next 30 odd years.

Q: What was your most memorable client experience?
A:
There have been so many amazing clients and outcomes that I hold dear to me, it’s hard to pick just one. But I actually met my fiancee reviewing his mortgage... so I guess that would have to be it!

Q: You previously worked with ANZ for a number of years. What have you learned from that experience and how do these lessons help you now?
A:
My banking experience has definitely helped get an understanding of how banks work, and all the different departments and processes. Knowing how banks assess home loan applications also comes in handy, as it is sometimes quite different than how a client or someone fresh to the industry would expect.

Q: What do you see as the biggest opportunity for brokers in 2018?
A:
I think with the changes already underway with the LVR restrictions it is going to start getting easier for clients to borrow funds. Also, more and more clients are feeling empowered to get independent advice and are seeking out mortgage advisers.

Q: Does the industry need more regulation?
A:
Due to lack of regulation in the past, there are advisers currently operating with varying degrees of qualifications and knowledge. I think there needs to be more transparency for clients around the level of advice they should expect to receive from their chosen adviser.

Q: Outside the broking business, what else do you enjoy doing?
A:
I have a young son, and actually another one on the way. So, weekend sports are a big past time, along with enjoying the beautiful outdoor lifestyle Taranaki has to offer. I've recently learned to skateboard.

Q: If you were the Prime Minister for a day, what would you do?
A:
(Haha oh dear) Lots... but, firstly, it would involve more affordable housing, and working towards a roof over every head!

Q: If you could have dinner with any three people who would you invite and why?
A:
Robin Williams, Jacinta Ardern. Gordon Ramsey. It would be a hilarious, educational and inspiring evening!

Q: Complete this sentence: If I wasn’t in mortgage broking, I would be...
A:
A chef; I love cooking for my family and the kitchen is my happy place!
