Searches surge from Democratic states
Following Donald Trump’s election victory, New Zealand has seen a dramatic spike in property searches from the US, especially from Democrat-leaning states.
On November 7 (NZST), searches surged 123% compared to the previous day, one of the highest single-day increases this year, according to realestate.co.nz.
“This level of interest from the US is remarkable,” said Vanessa Williams (pictured above), spokesperson for realestate.co.nz, noting a strong political motivation.
Searches soar as results finalise
Searches for New Zealand properties on realestate.co.nz nearly tripled as Trump’s win was confirmed, with a 179.8% increase between November 6 and 7.
“The decision to move countries is deeply personal, but the scale of this reaction suggests that New Zealand is increasingly attractive in politically turbulent times,” Williams said.
Pre-election interest and post-result spike
Interest began to climb in the two weeks leading up to the election. From October 25 to November 7, US visitors to the site increased by 36.6% compared to the previous two weeks.
“This indicates that many were exploring New Zealand’s property market in anticipation of the election outcome,” Williams said.
Strongest demand from blue states
California and Virginia, both Democrat-leaning states that supported Kamala Harris, recorded the highest year-on-year increases in New Zealand property searches, with a 96.6% jump in California and a 30.9% rise in Virginia.
“The timing of the election and the lift in searches from Democrat-leaning states suggest US politics are a factor,” said Williams, emphasising New Zealand’s appeal to Americans in search of a more stable lifestyle.
