Auckland sees surge in new homes – and the numbers are rising

The number of new homes in Auckland continues to increase as New Zealand recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and they are starting to catch up to demand.

The Auckland Council issued 1,581 Code Compliance Certificates for new homes in November 2020, up 41% compared to the same month in 2019. It brought the total number of new homes completed in Auckland to 12,054 in the 12 months ended November 2020, a 15% increase compared to the previous 12 months, reported Interest.co.nz.

The council issues a Code Compliance Certificate when a building is completed. The latest figures suggest that less than 1,300 additional homes are needed every month to catch up to Auckland’s migration-driven population growth.

According to Stats NZ, the number of new dwellings consented in New Zealand in the year to November 2020 reached 38,624, a 4.2% increase compared to the same month in the previous year. In Auckland, the number of new dwellings consented in the same period reached 16,293, up 9.6% compared to November in 2019.

Auckland Council’s figures show that most residential buildings were completed and issued with a Code Compliance Certificate within two years of receiving their consent.
