BNZ offers financial aid for Otago and Southland flood victims

In response to the severe rainfall that has hit Otago and Southland, BNZ is offering a comprehensive assistance package to customers affected by the flooding and weather damage.

Key features of the package include personalized reviews of home lending facilities, temporary personal overdrafts for customers awaiting insurance payouts, and special arrangements for small businesses, agricultural, and commercial customers.

For personal banking customers, temporary overdrafts are available, with standard interest rates and credit criteria applying. Small businesses can apply for temporary overdrafts of up to $10,000 without an application fee, while agri, business, and commercial customers can access up to $100,000 in overdraft funds, also free of application charges.

“We understand the challenges that can be posed to households, businesses, and communities as a result of severe weather events. We’ve put together a range of practical support options to help ease some of the immediate financial pressure our customers might be facing,” said Anna Flower, BNZ executive of personal and business banking.

Flower encouraged those experiencing hardship to reach out.

“We also have a range of other options available, especially for customers who are facing hardship, so I encourage people to get in touch so we can see how we can help,” Flower said.

Business and agribusiness customers are urged to contact their BNZ Partner to discuss support options. Small business owners can call 0800 BNZSME, while personal banking customers can reach out through BNZ’s digital platforms or by calling 0800 ASKBNZ. BNZ PremierCare Insurance customers can contact IAG NZ at 0800 248 888 or submit an online claim.

Due to safety concerns and advisories from local authorities, BNZ has temporarily closed its Dunedin branches and Partner Centre, though its Invercargill branch remains open. The bank’s ATM network in affected areas continues to operate, ensuring access to essential banking services.

“It’s important that our customers and our BNZers stay safe,” Flower said, adding that Dunedin-based staff are now working from home.
